Our sustainability promise
Sustainability is more than just a guiding principle for NEULAND - it is our promise to Wolfsburg. As the city's largest housing company, we design living spaces that inspire today and endure tomorrow. Our aim is to create affordable living space that is ecologically responsible, socially valuable and economically viable.
We are guided by the three pillars of sustainability: environmental, social and governance (ESG). They form the framework for our daily actions - from climate-friendly modernisation and innovative new builds to vibrant, socially mixed neighbourhoods and responsible and transparent corporate governance. This is how we invest in the future of our tenants, in the progress of our city and in a region worth living in.
Stronger together for sustainable living
Sustainability does not succeed on its own - it comes from working together. This is why NEULAND relies on strong partnerships and active dialogue. As a founding member of the Wohnen.2050 initiative, we are shaping the path to a climate-neutral housing industry together with housing companies from all over Germany. Because we are convinced:
"What one person can't do, many can."
This is another reason why we are part of other strong networks in the industry:
This is how we combine regional commitment with supra-regional expertise: for a sustainable, future-proof Wolfsburg and a viable future.
Environment - our responsibility
Skip tab navigationOur greatest leverage in climate protection lies in the heat supply. Almost our entire portfolio is connected to the municipal district heating network, which is available throughout Wolfsburg. This means that we are already in an excellent position for future decarbonisation.
Our focus is therefore not on changing the system, but on efficiency: we are reducing heat consumption through energy modernisation and minimising losses in our buildings.
This allows us to utilise the existing district heating infrastructure as efficiently as possible - and make a direct contribution to the climate-friendly transformation.
For us, environmentally friendly living means saving energy, protecting resources and making neighbourhoods climate-resilient. Wherever we have an influence on the power supply, we rely on green electricity, and by expanding photovoltaics, we are increasingly generating renewable energy directly on site.
We design our outdoor facilities to be climate-adapted: with greenery, shade zones, infiltration surfaces and measures that mitigate periods of heat and strengthen biodiversity. At the same time, we pay attention to resource-conserving redensification in order to create new living space without unnecessarily consuming land.
We also support modern, low-emission everyday mobility with car-sharing schemes and good cycle and public transport connections.
We also live sustainability at work: our vehicle fleet is already largely electrified, supplemented by e-bikes for short journeys. We only use green electricity and photovoltaics at our workplaces also support the energy supply.
Our tradespeople work on a tablet and app basis and optimise their routes to avoid unnecessary journeys and conserve resources. At the same time, we rely on digital, low-paper processes throughout the company.
Transparency out of conviction
For us, sustainability means making responsibility visible. That is why we published our first sustainability report in accordance with the German Sustainability Code (DNK) in December 2025, voluntarily and with the aim of being measured against our own goals.
Our publication can be viewed in the official DNK database. In the future, we will continue to develop our reporting and are aiming for voluntary sustainability reporting in accordance with the VSME/VME standard as the next step towards even greater clarity, reliability and transparency.
Social responsibility
Skip tab navigationWe don't just create housing - we create living spaces. Our task is to provide affordable, secure and stable housing for all sections of the population.
This includes
- socially balanced letting,
- barrier-free and age-appropriate offers,
- Support for people in special life situations,
- advice from our neighbourhood and service team.
We always keep affordable housing in mind
For new builds and modernisations, we voluntarily and consciously make targeted use of public funding, including via NBank andalready via financing from the European Investment Bank (EIB).
In this way, we ensure that housing in Wolfsburg remains accessible to everyone, today and tomorrow.
A community is where people live together. We actively promote this:
- Neighbourhood meetings and meeting places,
- leisure and educational programmes for families,
- regional cooperation, e.g. with social organisations, foundations and educational institutions.
Our goal: vibrant, stable and diverse neighbourhoods where people feel at home.
As a municipal company, we bear responsibility beyond our housing stock.
This includes
- Financial support for social and cultural projects,
- the work of the NEULAND Foundation,
- Co-operations to promote integration, education, employment and participation,
- infrastructure services such as youth centres, advice centres and the rental of commercial space for social organisations.
We invest in people, not just in buildings.
With the NEULAND Foundation Wolfsburg, we are involved in areas where support, proximity and participation are particularly needed. Since 2013, the foundation has been strengthening social interaction in the city's neighbourhoods and creating opportunities for people of all generations - from children and young people to senior citizens.
The foundation has a clear goal:
to improve living situations, combat loneliness, strengthen community and enable social participation.
In particular, it promotes:
- Dialogues between young and old,
- social participation of socially disadvantaged people,
- integration and tolerance,
- commitment in Wolfsburg's neighbourhoods.
Central projects of the NEULAND Foundation
- Heart+Ear - against loneliness in old age
The project brings older people who live in seclusion together with committed volunteers. Regular conversations and visits create valuable relationships that reduce isolation and give people a zest for life. - wohnsionär - youth projects with an impact
"wohnsionär" is the foundation's youth brand. It supports young people in taking on social responsibility, actively participating and contributing their ideas for living together in Wolfsburg. - Neighbourhood projects - proximity, dialogue, togetherness
In addition to the large programmes, the foundation supports many small but effective projects in Wolfsburg's neighbourhoods - from integration offers and inclusion projects to leisure, meeting and educational formats.
Why the foundation is important
The NEULAND Foundation Wolfsburg is at the heart of our social sustainability. It creates encounters, builds bridges between generations and population groups and ensures that people not only live in Wolfsburg - but belong to it.
The foundation's commitment is supported by full-time staff, numerous volunteers and the support of the NEULAND housing association.
Social sustainability begins in your own company. We stand for:
- secure jobs,
- fair remuneration based on collective agreements,
